Virginia Beach, VA - The Johnson & Wales volleyball team earned their first win in Pool B action as they defeated 10th seeded Penn State Fayette 2-0 Friday morning. JWU won each of the two games 25-20. Johmillet Berrios recorded 6 kills to pace the Wildcats in the match. Toniya Scott added 4 kills, 3 digs, and a block. Moana Reid handed out 15 assists and added 6 digs. Kendall Watson served 3 aces in addition to her 14 digs.
The Wildcats took on 6th seeded Cincinnati Clermont in their final Pool B match on Friday afternoon. JWU prevailed in three sets, 25-16, 18-25, and 15-11. The win was a true team effort as four separate players recorded at least 6 kills: Scott (6), Tiy Gonzalez (6), Berrios (9), and Jamie Hay (8). Kendall Watson tallied 15 digs, while Berrios added 10, Reid 8, and Keri Ketchie 7. Reid also had 28 assists in the match. The win secured the #3 seed in Pool B and advanced JWU to the elimination portion of the tournament for the second time in school history. The team also became the first Wildcat squad to win more than one contest in a single postseason.
Maine-Fort Kent, the 9th overall seed awaited JWU in the quarterfinals on Friday night. The match proved to be a back and forth affair that saw the teams split the first four games. The Wildcats built a 12-8 lead in the deciding set before the Bengals rallied to score the final seven points of the match to claim a 15-12 fifth set victory. Berrios finished the match with 13 kills, 19 digs, 1 ace, and 2 blocks. Scott added 12 kills, 2 aces, 5 digs, and 3 blocks. Reid recorded 38 assists with 5 digs. Watson had 27 digs and 8 kills.
