Johnson & Wales Upsets Undefeated UNC-Charlotte in Dramatic Fashion 8-7
Johnson & Wales University scored six unanswered goals in the last 15:46 of the third period to upset undefeated UNC-Charlotte by a score of 8-7 at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, NC on Sunday night.
UNC-Charlotte came into this game 6-0 to start off their 2011-2012 season. Johnson & Wales came into the game 1-2 with their most recent win this past Friday night against Wake Forest University. UNC-Charlotte found itself leading at the end of the first period 3-0 and building on that lead at the end of two periods 6-2.
"My players never gave up they believed not only in themselves but to also play a full 60 minutes of hockey on the ice." said Chris Plano, JWU Head Coach. "I am so proud of my guys, this is by far the most dramatic and biggest win in this program's history, and a win like this is going to set the tone for the rest of the season for us."
Michael Morgan scored his third goal of the night, a power play goal, tieing the game with 1:00 left in regulation assisted by Matt Famiglietti and Cam Heath. Then 28 seconds later Cam Heath scored the game winning goal, his second goal of the night all alone on a breakaway assisted by Matt Famiglietti to give JWU the 8-7 lead.
Other goal scorers for Johnson & Wales included Cam Heath, Joe Cannan, and Taylor Hodgkins. Al Sedaghat made 29 saves in goal for JWU.
UNC-Charlotte goal scorers included Alex Gold (2), Daryle Prantera (2), Steve Walsh, Joey Delvicchio, and Trey Anderson.
Johnson & Wales improves to 2-2 (2-0 BRHC) while UNC-Charlotte drops to 6-1 (2-1 BRHC).
Johnson & Wales returns home this Friday night, October 21st against Virginia Military Institute (VMI) at 10:15p.m. at the Pineville Ice House. The club program will also play home to a JWU Alumni exhibition game this Saturday afternoon, October 22nd at 4:15p.m. at the Pineville Ice House.
