Winston-Salem, NC – The Wildcats (5-17) came into Tuesday night's game at Piedmont International looking to bounce back from there disappointing showing at last weekend's JWU Invitational. The Wildcats hung tough with the homesteading Bruins but were unable to overcome a 28 point effort from PIU's Mike Key.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 17-8 lead in the first nine minutes of the game as they were able to find easy baskets inside from the likes of Michael Daniel, Robbie Sterling and Mario Irby. The Wildcats were able to maintain their nine point advantage for the next seven minutes of the half as a variety of players contributed offensively. PIU closed the half on a 14-2 run to take a 32-29 halftime lead, Key led the way for the Bruins with six points during the run.
Calvin Gant scored the first eight points for PIU, enabling them to stretch their lead to 40-32 with 15:29 minutes left. A Mario Irby jump shot brought the Wildcats within four at 45-41 with 10:32 left. After PIU pushed the lead to as many as of 11, the Wildcats went on a run of their own behind two Jay Keller 3-pointers, it pulled within one with two Nick Crawford free-throws with 6:25 left in the game. The Bruins will hold a slim lead for the next four minutes as JWU would get within a bucket at 62-60 with 2:05 left. The Wildcats would go cold from there as PIU would close the game on a 10-0 run to claim a 72-60 win.
The Bruins were lead in scoring by Mike Key's 28 points and Calvin Gant 22 points and 8 rebounds. Kindrick Anderson led the Wildcats with 12 points while Joshua Cohen added 10 more. Mario Irby finished the game with 10 points and 8 rebounds for JWU.
The Wildcats are next in action at home on Saturday, 1/26 as they host William Peace University. Tip time is schedule for 3:00pm.
