Charlotte, NC – Johnson & Wales (5-19) hosted the Owls of Warren Wilson College (8-10 (Ranked #13 in the USCAA Coaches Poll) this evening. JWU found themselves shorthanded as three key contributors sat out the game. The Wildcats fought to the very end before falling to WWC 78-72.
The Wildcats started the first half hot, scoring the first 7 points of the game. The Owls were able to quickly tie the score at 7, before the Wildcats regained their momentum and a 7 point lead after Julian McCants hit a 3 pointer with 12:55 left in the half. Mistakes made by the Wildcats allowed the Owls to close the gap and retie the game at 24. A Raysean Love 3 pointer gave the Owls their first lead of the game with 2:25 left. That was part of a 7-3 run to end the half for Warren Wilson as they took a 35-33 lead into the locker room.
The Wildcats opened the half on a 9-4 run to take a 3 point lead at 44-41 with 17:31 to play. Love hit 3 free throws and then canned a jumper on back to back possessions for the Owls to give them a lead they would never relinquish. The Wildcats tried to battle back, getting to within 2 point of the Owls on several occasions, but could not get over the hump. The Owls made 4 of 6 free throws in the closing seconds to put the game away.
The Wildcats will travel to Francis Marion University on Wednesday, January 30th. Tip-off is set for 7pm.
