Charlotte, NC – Quoyai Shorter, a 2017 recruit for the Johnson & Wales University men's basketball program, passed away recently in his hometown of Phenix City, Ala.

Shorter, a rising sophomore and aspiring business major, was 19 years old.

“We are saddened by the sudden loss of Quoyai Shorter,” said Trudi Lacey, Director of Athletics at Johnson & Wales University.  “We were looking forward to him being a part of our JWU Athletics family.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends in this difficult time.”

A transfer from Wentworth Military College, Shorter averaged nearly 16 points per game for the Red Dragons this past year.  He earned 2nd Team All-Region and Team MVP honors as a freshman at Wentworth.

"’Q’ was a caring, respectful young man who was very close to his family,” said Jim Casciano, head coach of the Johnson & Wales men’s basketball program.  “He was excited about attending Johnson & Wales to get his degree and play basketball.  His death is such a tragic loss because he had so much to live for.

“My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. ‘Q’ will always be a part of the JWU basketball family.”
