Charlotte, NC - Head Coach James Drzewiecki and the Johnson & Wales men's soccer program announced the signing of Charlotte native and South Mecklenburg graduate Carlos Perez on Thursday to the 2017 recruiting class.
Perez, a center forward, was a three-year letterwinner for the Sabres and was a member of the 2015 state championship side that finished undefeated at 23-0-2. The team also lifted the SoMeck 8 Conference championship that year.
"He's a very good late pickup for us," said Drzewiecki. "Carlos battled some injuries in the past year that cost him his senior season, but he's back to strength and he can help us immediately. We haven't had a true back-to-goal target forward since our first year, and he addresses that need. He's very intelligent with his movement and hold up play, and he's not afraid to run at the defenders or take a hit from distance if they back off. From a tactical perspective, he should fit in seemlessly. We're excited about him."
The 6'0" target man played club for 99 CSA North Select earlier in his high school career before moving to Charlotte United as a junior.
Perez is a standout in the classroom, having been a member of his school's A/B Honor Roll. He is the son of Alfonso and Mirian Perez and plans on majoring in Business Management.
