Charlotte, NC - The Johnson & Wales Charlotte women's basketball team took on NCAA D-III Piedmont College in the first ever meeting between the schools on Friday night. The Wildcats (5-5) fought hard all game, but were unable to come out on top, as the Lions (5-3) came away with a 84-79 win.
The game was nip and tuck throughout the first half as Piedmont enjoyed just a 2 point halftime lead, 41-39. The 3rd Quarter turned out to be decisive as the Lions outscored JWU by 8, allowing them to take a 10 point advantage into the final stanza. Despite a valiant effort by JWU's Vanderia Shackleford, who had 13 of her game high 25 points after halftime, the Wildcats were never able to significantly cut into the Piedmont lead in the 4th quarter.
In addition to her 25 points, Shackleford also tied for team rebounding honors with 7. Ineesha Hankerson came off the bench to add 13 points and 7 rebounds as well. Megan Sanders was the only other Wildcat in double figures with 12 points, including three 3 pointers.
The Wildcats have the next three weeks off before returning to action on the road against Columbia International on January 11, 2017. That game is set for a 5:30pm tip-off.
