Women's Basketball Hands Pfeiffer First Loss in 65-61 Win

Charlotte, N.C. - The USCAA #2 Johnson & Wales women's basketball team topped previously undefeated Pfeiffer University 65-61 at the Wildcat Center on Thursday.

The Wildcats (8-3) were led by Ineesha Hankerson and Jaquana Pauling, who each recorded double-doubles on the evening.  Hankerson finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Pauling added 12 points and 10 boards against the NCAA Division III Falcons (3-1).

Chase Muhammad also scored 12 points for Johnson & Wales while Vanderia Shackleford chipped in with 10 points.

The Wildcats never trailed after a layup from Hankerson early in the game knotted the score at 4-4.  Johnson & Wales led by as many as 11 points midway through the third quarter after a layup by Muhammad with 4:21 remaining, but Pfeiffer went on a 14-3 run to pull level at 48-48.

Consecutive baskets by Shackleford, Muhammad, and Pauling quickly reestablished a six-point advantage for the Wildcats, and Pfeiffer never pulled within closer than four points the rest of the way.

Johnson & Wales held their opponents to just 21-of-67 shooting while forcing 23 turnovers.  Hankerson and Shackleford each finished with four steals on the evening to lead the defensive effort.

Pfeiffer's A'Mya McClain led all scorers with 15 points on the evening.

Johnson & Wales will resume play on Dec. 21 when it hosts NCAA Division I foe South Carolina State University.  Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Wildcat Center.
