JWU Women's Soccer Defeats Kentucky Christian in Home Opener

Pineville, NC - The Johnson & Wales University women's soccer team won its home opener on Saturday, claiming a 3-0 victory over visiting Kentucky Christian University at the OrthoCarolina Sportsplex.

Grace Newbold, Lana Truese, and Danielle Doyle all scored for the Wildcats, marking the first time in program's three-year history the team has opened the season with consecutive victories.

Newbold, a freshman, scored her first career goal just seven minutes in on an assist from Doyle.  Her effort from the right edge of the penalty box found the far side netting, with Kentucky Christian goalkeeper Lakin Redmond only able to get her fingertips to it before it went in.

The Wildcats continued to dominate the match, holding a 20-2 advantage in shots, but were made to wait until Truese's 80th minute strike gave them a 2-0 advantage.  Doyle once again was the provider, picking out Truese for a top corner finish from 15 yards out.

Truese would repay the favor two minutes later, putting Doyle through on a breakaway for the third and final goal.

Kylie Priddy and Jordann Kinkin combined to keep a clean sheet for Johnson & Wales, but were not called into action.

The Wildcats will return home on Sept. 10 when they host LaGrange College.  Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the OrthoCarolina Sportsplex.
