Salisbury, NC - In the final match of the weekend, the Lady Wildcats (3-3) (15th in the USCAA Coaches Poll) played the Blue Bears of Livingstone College. Hoping to sweep the tournament, JWU played hard, but fell short three games to two.
Game one started evenly, but was shortly followed by a 10-6 lead by the Blue Bears. Strong play from Kaitlin Kuntz and Shanna Stewart allowed JWU to tie the game at 11. Despite strong play from LC's Lareecia Swiney, JWU went up 19-15. The Blue Bears responded with strong offensive play to get within 1 point, but the Lady Wildcats were able to hold them off behind great play from Rianna Bray and Stewart. The Lady Wildcats won game one.
JWU entered game two strong, earning a 4-1 lead. Excellent defensive and sharp attacks at the net moved the lead to 18-8. JWU maintained their aggression winning game two 25-12.
Game three opened with exchanging runs from both teams, with the score tied at 5. JWU took the lead, but LC returned with great defense to take the lead by 3. The Lady Wildcats picked up their hustle, however the Blue Bears continued to find open spots in the Wildcats defense, closing game three 25-15.
The Blue Bears made the early lead into game four. JWU went on a 7-1run to take the lead. Both teams showed great defense to tie the game at 14. LC stretched the lead to 5 closing game four 25-22.
Tied up at two games apiece, the final game is a back and forth battle. Several lead changes were made throughout the game, but LC found a way to take the final game 16-14.
The Lady Wildcats are next in action at home when they take on the Wildcats of Wytheville Community College on Tuesday, September 11th. Match time is set for 7pm.
