Charlotte, NC - The Lady Wildcats (11-5, Ranked 3rd in the USCAA Coaches' Poll) played host this evening to the Knights of Surry Community College. Both teams played strong throughout the night, but JWU was able to win the match 3 games to 2.
In game one, the Knights took an early 5-2 lead. JWU responded with strong defense, tying the score at 7. Coach Phillips called a timeout attempting to refocus her team, however, SCC fought back with strong net play and went on a 7-1 run, making the score 17-11. Kaitlin Kuntz and Shanna Stewart provided great play to help keep the Lady Wildcats in the game, but JWU fell short 17-25.
The Knights took a quick 3-0 start in game two. Behind solid defense, the Lady Wildcats took the lead 6-5. With strong defense at the net, JWU was able to maintain their lead. Front row players, Moriah Hughes, Lauren Cordts, and Stewart played tough which gave the Lady Wildcats a greater lead at 16-13. SCC fought back through good service, to tie the game. Both teams rallied back and forth keeping the score close, however JWU would take the edge to finish game two 25-23.
Both teams battled back and forth to start game three. With many mistakes from the Knights the Lady Wildcats were able to capitalize on, taking the lead 13-4. SCC was able to break JWU's run with good offense, but the Lady Wildcats battled back behind good serving from Emily Kirchner and excellent net play by Hughes, making the score 17-5. Kuntz continued with strong serving to keep JWU's lead, and eventually taking game three 25-11.
JWU had continued their strong net play, taking the early lead in game four 6-1. JWU had effective offense, keeping the lead 17-11. The Knights fought back with powerful offense, catching up to JWU, decreasing the wildcats lead by 1 point. JWU took advantage of the Knights serving mistakes, increasing JWU's score 20-16. Correcting their errors, SCC came back to take the lead and the game 25-22.
The Wildcats with strong servicing behind Kuntz to start game five 3-0. However, the Knights went on a quick run to take the lead. After a final timeout, Kirchner served JWU to an 8-0 run, regaining the lead to make the score 14-10. The Wildcats played hard in the last 5 points of the game to take the win 15-12.
The Lady Wildcats are next in action as they play host to Catawba Valley Community College on Thursday, October 4th. Match time is set for 7pm.
