Charlotte, NC - This evening the Lady Wildcats (13-7) (Ranked 3rd in the USCAA Coaches Poll) took a 3-2 win over cross-town rival Johnson C. Smith University. It was a marathon match that was exciting to the end.
JWU used strong net play from Shanna Stewart to open a 5-2 lead in game one. The Golden Bulls used stong team defense to fight back within 1 point. The Lady Wildcats responded with a 4-0 run with strong defense of their own. Reanna Bray and Lauren Cordts played tough at the net, helping JWU open a 17-10 lead. JCSU went on a brief run, but the Lady Wildcats stayed aggressive, closing the game 25-18.
The Golden Bulls would start game two on top at 4-1. The Lady Wildcats tightened their defense, and tied the score at 5. JCSU went on a short run, but JWU was able to step in and close the gap within 1 several times, and eventually tied the score at 24-24. The Golden Bulls rallied to win the final two points of the game. Their 26-24 win evened the match at 1 game each.
Following a 3-3 start into the third game, JWU took control at the net going on an 8-2 run. Moriah Hughes contributed to that Lady Wildcat run with 3 kills. JWU was able to stave off several JCSU mini runs, and wen on to win game three, 25-20.
Game four was an extremely hard fought game for both the Lady Wildcats and the Golden Bulls. The score was tied at 4, 10, 14, 15, and 18, until JCSU went on a 7-0 run to end game four at 25-18. That set up a decisive game five.
JWU couldn't have dreamed of a better start to that final game. They jumped out to an 8-0 lead and cruised home from there, taking the final frame 15-4. Kaitlin Kuntz provided stellar serves and Cordts was simply dominant at the net.
JWU completed their second consecutive season sweep over their I-77 neighbors. They have also assured the first .500 season in program history. The Lady Wildcats are next in action at home as they host Piedmont International University on Thursday, October 11th. Match time is set for 7pm.
