Wildcats Outlast Previously Undefeated Sandhills in Five Sets

Charlotte, NC - The Johnson & Wales University volleyball team claimed victory in five sets over previously undefeated Sandhills Community College on Tuesday, winning 15-25, 25-12, 12-25, 26-24, 15-13 at the Wildcat Center.

The Wildcats (6-8) were led by Johmillet Berrios with 14 kills while Toniya Scott added nine for the hosts.

Sandhills (13-1) had only dropped four sets all season heading into Tuesday's match, but were unable to fend off a resilient Johnson & Wales side that rallied after trailing two sets to one.

"This was a big win for us," said Johnson & Wales head coach Callie Phillips.  "Lately, we have been making a lot of costly errors that put us behind early in matches.  Today started out the same, but our team pulled together and played with a fire I haven't seen yet this season.  I'm so proud of the determination and fight they showed tonight, and I'm glad we could get the win."

Moana Reid finished with 15 assists while Halle Franklin added 10 for the Wildcats.  Defensively, Keri Ketchie and Kendall Watson tied for the team lead with 17 digs each.

Johnson & Wales will resume play on Friday when it hosts local rival Johnson C. Smith at the Wildcat Center.  Play is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
