Charlotte, NC - Several streaks were started, continued, or ended on Friday night as the Johnson & Wales volleyball team defeated Johnson C. Smith 3-0 at the Wildcat Center.
The Wildcats (7-8) put together back-to-back wins for the first time in 2017, while the Golden Bulls suffered their first defeat after a 5-0 start to their season. The win also marked the second consecutive undefeated opponent that JWU has dealt the first loss of the season to. Finally, Johnson & Wales defeated Johnson C. Smith at home for the eighth consecutive match.
Head Coach Callie Phillips was estatic with her team's performance. "From start to finish, this is the best match we have played all season. All of our hitters finished with positive hitting percentages, and five of the six had five or more kills. Our setters made great decisions, and our defense was tough. We played smart, we stayed hungry, and we really played to our potential tonight. I couldn't be happier with this outing."
Freshman Jamie Hay led the Wildcat attack with 8 kills, while Toniya Scott added 7 more. Kendall Watson paced the team on the defensive end, recording 15 digs. Johmillet Berrios chipped in with 12 digs as well.
Johnson & Wales welcomes another CIAA opponent, Livingstone College, to the Wildcat Center on Tuesday, September 26th. Match time is 7:00pm.
NOTE: The volleyball team collected food donations as part of Operation Sandwich prior to the game. The team will donate sandwiches to homeless shelters in the Charlotte area early next week.
