Virginia Beach, VA - The Johnson & Wales women's soccer team kicked off play in the 2017 USCAA National Championship Tournament with a late morning matchup against the 4th seeded Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. The Panthers opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a goal from Katie Benson. JWU freshman Grace Newbold evened things up 15 minutes later as she headed in a cross from Danielle Doyle. Benson answered in just 30 seconds on a breakaway to give ACPHS a 2-1 halftime advantage. Neither team would score for the next 60 minutes until ACPHS's Erin Tersegeno provided an insurance goal with just under three minutes left in the game. JWU next plays Penn State Brandywine on Saturday at 10:00am
JWU' men's soccer team played their first ever postseason match against 3rd seeded Florida National. The Conquistadors struck early in the game as Pedro Veiga headed in a corner kick in the 4th minute. FNU would add another goal in the half, and two more in the second stanza to claim a 4-0 win. The Wildcats could only muster 4 shots on goal in the contest, while Florida National took 26 of their own. The Wildcats take on Penn State-Brandywine Saturday at 2:30pm.
The Wildcat volleyball team opened pool play with matches against the two teams that played in the 2016 USCAA National Championship match. Their first match was against St. Mary of the Woods College. The 2nd seeded Pomeroys took the match 25-14, 25-11. JWU was led by Johme Berrios with 6 kills and Moana Reid with 8 assists.
The Wildcats took on Florida College, the 3rd seed in their second match of the day. The Falcons earned a two set victory over the Wildcats, 25-10, 25-8. Madison Steed recorded 3 kills, while Kendall Watson had 8 digs.
JWU is back in action Friday morning at 9:30am as they take on Penn State-Fayette. They then conclude pool play with a match against Cincinnati Clermont at 2:00pm.
