Charlotte, NC - The USCAA released the brackets for the 2019 Division II National Championships on Saturday. For the first time in school history, both the JWU men's and women's basketball teams were selected to travel to Uniontown, PA to compete in this year's tournament.
The reigning national champion women's team enters the tournament as the #4 seed. The Wildcats will enter the tournament winners of 7 of their last 8 games, and a 16-8 overall record. They captured the EMAC conference tournament title this weekend with wins over Warren Wilson in the semi-finals and Apprentice in the championship game. They are led by Chase Muhammad (17 ppg, 6 rpg, 2.3 spg), Ineesha Hankerson (16 ppg, 11 rpg, 1.7 bpg), and Bianca Covington (8 rpg, 1.7 spg). JWU ranks 10th nationally in points per game (72.2), 8th in blocks (4.1), and 8th in rebound margin (10.1). They are also one of the better free throw shooting teams, rankind 3rd in free throw makes per game (14.3), and 5th in attempts (21.5) The quest to defend their crown begins against #5 Penn State-Beaver (22-4) on Monday, March 4th at 12:00 pm.
The Wildcat men's basketball team returns to the USCAA national tourament after a three year hiatus, earning the #5 seed. Johnson & Wales has won 14 of 17 contests in calendar year 2019, en route to a 19-10 record. The 19 wins are the second most in school history. Juniors Robert Hobson (18 ppg, 4 rpg, 3 apg), and Majerle Poole (15 ppg, 6 rpg), and sophomore Kajuan Madden-McAfee (12 ppg, 4 rpg, and 3 apg) highlight the attack for JWU, but the Wildcats boast six players who have scored as many as 18 points in a game at least once this season. Johnson & Wales averages 89.5 points per game, 8th best in the country, fueled in large part by 10.9 made threes per game, which is 6th best nationally. The Wildcats excel on the defensive side of the ball as well, ranking 10th in steals (9.3), and 7th in blocks (4.1). JWU will take on #4 Southern Maine on Sunday, March 3rd at 8:00 pm.
