Charlotte, NC - The Wildcats (1-5) (Ranked 13th in the USCAA D-II Coaches Poll) took on the Lions of Emmanuel College this evening in their first home game of the season. Unfortunately, the Wildcats fell to the Lions by a score of 58-90.
Jay Keller made an early 3-point shot for the Wildcats, giving them what would prove to be their only lead of the game at 3-2. A Mario Irby layup tied the game at 7, but that would be followed by an extended dry spell for JWU. The Wildcats could only muster 1 point over the next eight minutes as Emmanuel sprinted out to a 22-8 lead, aided by Michael Stanley's 7 points in that stretch. Back-to-back 3 pointers by Keller and Kindrick Anderson allowed JWU to cut the Lion lead to 9 midway through the first half at 25-16. The Wildcats then went cold again, going nearly seven minutes with no points as Emmanuel increased its lead to 14 points. A flourish at the end of the half by the Lions staked them to a 20 point lead at recess, 44-24. The difference in the first half was the inside dominace by the Lions. They outscored JWU 22-4 in the paint. They knocked down six 3 pointers in addition.
The Wildcats were able to play even with Emmanuel for the first 7 minutes of the second half as Robbie Sterling and Keller each scored 3 points during that stretch. The Lions then went on a 12-0 spurt over the next 1:55 that increased their lead to 61-30, and put to end any doubt about the outcome. Turnovers were the second half story of this game. Wildcat mistakes led to 24 second half points for Emmanel as they cruised to a 90-58 win and remained undefeated on the season.
Jay Keller was the only Wildcat to crack double figures on the night. He had 15 points, while Kindrick Anderson and Taylor Thomas chipped in 8 apiece. Robbie Sterling led the 'Cats on the glass where had 6 rebounds. Mario Irby added 5 boards, and Thomas also recorded 5 assists in the game.
The Wildcats will travel to Greensboro to play in the Daly Seven Hotels Invitational hosted by Guilford College on November 16th and 17th.
