Wildcats Win Thriller

Wildcats Win Thriller

Charlotte, NC - Johnson & Wales (1-1) concluded the JWU Classic by hosting Berkeley (NJ) Saturday afternoon. As was the case on Friday night, this game turned into a nail biter. Unlike Friday night, however, the Wildcats prevailed with a 72-69 victory.

The teams traded baskets throughout the first portion of the game. Neither team led by more than one possession until Berkeley took a 12-8 lead on a Vinroy Dodd free throw at the 11:40 mark. A Joshua Cohen 3 pointer with 4:45 left in the first gave the Wildcats their largest lead of the half at 25-22. Andrew Tomlin's three with just over a minute left in the period gave the Knights a 36-35 halftime advantage.

Berkeley would extend their lead to seven at 46-39 in the first four minutes of the second half. The Wildcats rallied to tie the score with a 7-0 spurt over the next 1:15 keyed by DeQuincey Bennett's 3 pointer. Bennett kept the Wildcats in the game over the next four minutes as his nine consecutive points matched the Knights output in that stretch. Berkeley seemed to take control at that point. A pair of Andrew Tomlin free throws at the 3:17 mark gave the Knights their largest advantage of the game, 73-63. JWU turned up the defensive pressure and forced the Knights into six turnovers over the next three minutes and found themselves down only two, 79-77 with 20 seconds left. Haywood Jackson grabbed a defensive rebound off a missed Berkeley shot and Bennett buried his fifth three pointer of the game to give JWU the lead, 80-79 with 17 seconds left. The Knights committed one last turnover, and Cohen made two free throws to seal the 82-79 win.

Bennett led all scorers in the game with 24 points, 20 of which came in the 2nd half. Bobby Scriven added 16 points, while Hursel Forbes and Joshua Cohen had 14 and 12, respectively. Haywood Jackson battled his way to 9 rebounds, while Duane Chisholm handed out 6 assists.

The Wildcats take to the road for the first time this season as they travel to Columbia International for a 7:00pm game on Tuesday.
