Charlotte, NC -- Head Coach Jim Casciano and the Johnson & Wales Wildcat Men's Basketball Team are pleased to announce that Thiago Conceicao has chosen to continue his basketball career at JWU. A native of Brazil, Conceicao is 6'7" post player who now resides in Miami, FL. He is the son of Nilza Brazil. He attended Westwood Christian School in Florida where he earned All-State and All-County Honors after leading his team to the state final in his senior year in 2012-2013. He posted averages of 18 points, 14 rebounds, and 3 blocks per game that season.
While the other JWU players will be acclimating to playing for Coach Casciano this season, Conceicao already knows what to expect. In the 2013-2014 season, Conceicao played for Coach Casciano at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, where he averaged 14 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 blocks per game for the Owls. This campaign earned him First Team All-State and All-Rookie Team Accolades in Maine and Second Team All-Conference and USCAA Honorable Mention All-American Honors. In addition to his success on the court, Conceicao also is a strong student with a 3.1 grade point average. "I had the pleasure of coaching Thiago last season, and I am excited that he has decided to attend JWU," said Coach Casciano. "He is a true low post presence who has demonstrated that he can score and rebound at the collegiate level. I anticipate big things during his career at JWU."
The signing of Conceicao caps off a huge month for the Wildcats' recruiting class. Now that he has decided to make the move to Charlotte, Conceicao will begin preparing for the upcoming season, which starts October 31 with a game at home after a preseason full of hard work. Conceicao knows he made the right choice in coming to JWU, but he considered many things before signing with the Wildcats. "I chose JWU because of Coach Casciano, the education, the location and the opportunity to accomplish great things here," he said after his visit to Charlotte.
