Charlotte, NC -- In their first game of the JWU Invitational Friday night, the Wildcat Basketball Team took care of business with a convincing 99-72 win over College of Faith. The Wildcats got on the board early with a lay-up by Tramain Parker, followed by a Parker assist to Rickey Porter to set the tone of pushing the tempo and attacking the basket. With JWU leading 10-3 at the 15:15 mark, Joshua Cohen came off the bench to score four quick points to kickstart the offense. With 12:07 left in the first half, JWU led 16-9, but had looked a little sloppy and had trouble holding onto the ball, resulting in some unforced errors and turnovers. However, by 10:10 on the clock, the Wildcats took a 23-9 lead on a Tramain Parker three-point play. Three three-point baskets by DeQuincey Bennett fueled a JWU run where the Wildcats led by as many as thirty-two points in the first half. Outscoring College of Faith 39-15 in the last twelve minutes, the Wildcats led 55-24 at halftime. The second half saw JWU hold on to their lead, and all eleven players received fourteen or more minutes of playing time and scored at least one point.
JWU was led by Rickey Porter with 19 points. Also in double-figures were Tramain Parker (17), DeQuincey Bennett (14), Nick Crawford (10), and Joshua Cohen, who had 18 points to go with 10 rebounds in a solid effort. The Wildcats are now 8-9 and ranked #10 in the USCAA Division II Coaches Poll heading into tomorrow's match-up with USCAA foe Barber-Scotia. The Sabres lost a close one to Tennesee Temple in the first game of the tournament. Game time is 3:00 PM, after the first game between College of Faith and Tennessee Temple.
