Charlotte, NC -- In their second game in the JWU Invitational Tournament, the Wildcat Men's Basketball Team took on the Mighty Sabers of Barber-Scotia College. In a competitive, physical, and fast-paced game, the Wildcats used runs in the first and second halves to distance themselves from Barber-Scotia and won the game by a score of 104-83.
The game was tight in the opening minutes, and both teams fought hard to gain an advantage. By the 10:00 mark, JWU found themselves up by seven points following consecutive hustle plays from Andrew Williams and Joshua Cohen for four quick Wildcat points. With three and a half minutes left in the first half, a one-handed rebound and putback from DeQuincey Bennett brought the crowd to life and gave the Wildcats a 43-35 lead. Responding to cheers of "D-Up!" from the women's basketball team, the JWU men held onto their lead and ended the first half up 52-42.
The second half saw much of the same play from both teams. With ten minutes left to play, the Wildcats were up by eleven points at 74-63. From that point on, JWU hit the gas and outscored the Sabers by ten points over the final minutes behind strong play from Rickey Porter, Tramain Parker, David Bargamento, and Joshua Cohen. JWU went over the 100-point mark on a basket by Tolbert Holmes with just under two minutes left to play.
The Wildcats are now even on the season at 9-9. Rickey Porter led the Wildcats with 27 points and 14 rebounds. Five other JWU players were in double-figures as well as Tramain Parker (11), DeQuincey Bennett (12), Nick Crawford (12), Joshua Cohen (17), and David Bargamento (11) fueled a balanced JWU attack. The Wildcats' next game is Tuesday, January 20 at Allen University. Game time is 7:30 PM.
***Please note*** The women's basketball home game originally scheduled for Tuesday night has been cancelled. The Lady Wildcats will be at home on January 26 as they look to avenge a close loss when they host Montreat College at 6:00 PM.
