Greenville, SC -- The Johnson & Wales University Men's and Women's Basketball Teams travelled together to Bob Jones University for a doubleheader Tuesday evening. The seventh-ranked men's team proved that they could win away from the Student Center and secured their first road victory of the season with a 95-68 win. The women's team dropped a heartbreaker 68-67 after losing a lead in the final minute to some bad luck and missed free throws.
The first game of the doubleheader saw the women's teams locked in a battle. JWU won the first half and had a fourteen-point lead after the first twenty minutes of play. Bob Jones evened the score in the second half, setting the stage for the final thirty seconds. Holding a one-point lead, JWU took possession on a steal by Justina Tyler. Bob Jones committed a foul to regain the ball, and JWU was unable to convert the two free throws. Justina Tyler again stole the ball for JWU, and Bob Jones was forced to commit a second foul. Again, JWU missed two more free throws, and Bob Jones took possession for a final attempt to regain the lead. After setting up their offense, Bob Jones ran a driving play to the basket, and JWU committed a foul to stop the shot. Two clutch free throws from Bob Jones sealed the game, and a last second shot from Vanderia Shackleford wouldn't go down for the Wildcats. Jaquana Pauling led the Wildcats with 16 points. Vanderia Shackleford (13), Audresha Merritt (11), and Justina Tyler (10) were also in double figures. The Wildcats are now 5-12 on the season.
The men's game was an exhibition of solid defense and good shooting from the Wildcats. JWU has been great in the Student Center this year with a 9-1 record in front of the home crowd. The Wildcats took that energy on the road this time and held Bob Jones to 41.8% shooting while shooting 56.7% themselves. The Wildcats were up 42-33 at halftime and outscored Bob Jones by fifteen points in the second half to pull away with the victory. JWU had three twenty-point scorers on the night with DeQuincey Bennett and Rickey Porter each scoring 22 points and Tramain Parker adding 20. The Wildcats also shot 76.9% from the free throw line. This victory pulls JWU to .500 on the season at 10-10.
The teams travel to Mid-Atlantic Christian University on Friday for another doubleheader. The women play at 5:00 PM, and the men will follow at 7:00 PM.
