Win Streak Hits Five As 'Cats Take Down Thoroughbreds

Charlotte, NC - The JWU Men's Basketball Team hosted Blue Lights College on Saturday looking to extend their current winning streak to five games. The Wildcats, ranked #1 in the latest USCAA D2 Coaches Poll, scored at least 100 points for the third straight game, defeating the visiting Thoroughbreds of Blue Lights College 102-91.

The game featured 15 lead changes and 11 ties. BLC started the game on a 9-3 run, but the Wildcats (13-3) took a lead of their own on a Robert Hobson three pointer three minutes in. The teams battled back and forth with the Wildcats having their largest lead of seven points with 11:20 to go on a Majerle Poole layup. Still, it was the Thoroughbreds who led at the break 47-46.

The second half again back and forth, but the Wildcats eventually wore down their guests. An Antonio Smith layup with 7:40 left gave JWU their largest lead of the day, 80-67. With one minute to play, Zyrion Wilkins pushed the Wildcats into triple digits for the third consecutive contest. Another Poole layup was the final score for the hosts and the game finished 102-91.

The Wildcats dominated the boards, winning the rebounding battle 45-32. JWU collected more offensive rebounds (21) than defensive rebounds (20) for Blue Lights. The rebounding disparity helped JWU score 18 second chance points compared to only 9 for their opponent. It also helped them to a 50-46 points in the paint advantage. JWU went 24 of 36 from the free throw stripe, both season-highs.

Hobson led all players with 34 points, going 11 of 19 from the field, 4 of 6 from three, and 8 of 11 from the free throw line. He also grabbed 7 rebounds. Wilkins scored 20 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Poole scored 16, had 8 rebounds, and collected 4 assists. Malik Bullock and CJ Miller both had 10 points, and Miller also had 7 rebounds.
