Bermuda Run, NC - JWU's Men's Soccer Team hit the road to take on Piedmont International on Monday. It was a back and forth game with PIU taking the lead on three separate occasions, but in the end it was the Wildcats who took the victory, 4-3, in overtime.
Eric Smiley opened the scoring for the Bruins (2-5) in the 19th minute. The Wildcats responded 7 minutes later when Pablo Morera's shot deflected off of Sam Fanning. The 1-1 scoreline didn't hold long, as Smiley launched a shot from the top of the box. Again the Wildcats (6-0) answered, this time with a Shawn Geiger strike taking the game into halftime 2-2.
The deadlock held until the 63rd minute when Smiley completed his hat trick for PIU. The score remained 3-2 until the 85th minute when #1 JWU was fouled outside of the box. Mo Baskaron stepped up and tied the game on the free kick to send the game into overtime.
The first overtime period ended with no additional scoring, and the game send destined to end in a tie. Then, in one final attack, Sam Fanning was brought down in the box for a penalty with 2 seconds left on the clock. Baskaron took the ball, lined up the penalty, and sent the Wildcats home with the 4-3 victory.
"PIU is the one of the best teams we will play all year and they brought a great level of physicality and skill," said Head Coach Matt Payne. "It was a wild game and the guys showed their character and determination."
The Wildcats travel to play Christendom on Oct. 4 at 4:30 pm.
