Toccoa, GA - The JWU Men's Soccer Team traveled to Toccoa Falls College to begin their 2019-2020 season on Saturday. The Wildcats battled a tough Screaming Eagles squad and ultimately prevailed 6-1.
The Wildcats saw their first shots of the game stymied by TFC keeper David Chambers, before Zack Savage lashed a rocket that skimmed off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net in the 10th minute of play. The shot was set up by some pinpoint service from Bermuda native Diaje' Hart. Later in the first half, Ilijah Washington found the end of an Ian Triplett free kick as he headed it past Chambers for the Wildcats' second. The Screaming Eagles would claw their way back into the game as halftime approached when Jared Rockwell played Tou Yang free to cut the lead to 2-1.
The second half saw a rejuvenated JWU team. A dynamic run from defender Gunner Tootle created enough space for him to serve the ball into Triplett's path. Triplett finished the header for his first collegiate goal. Shortly after, Savage played Chance Wiginton in to the box. After the initial shot was saved, Wiginton found the rebound before the TFC defense could regroup, and calmly slotted the ball home. In the 77th minute, Victor Lucero raced on to a Weeb Isaac pass to take the score to 5-1. Triplett would cap the scoring for the Wildcats on an assist from Hamad Ali Ahmed in the 79th minute.
The Wildcats return to action on September 2nd at 11:00 am as they host Middle Georgia State University.
