Charlotte, NC - The Johnson & Wales University Men's Soccer Team played their second match in three days as they hosted Middle Georgia State University on Labor Day. In a hard fought contest, the Wildcats defeated their NAIA guests 1-0.
The lone goal of the contest came in the 12th minute of play when Victor Lucero played Zack Savage in towards goal. Middle Georgia keeper Matt Wallace left his box to challenge the ball, but Savage was able to deflect the clearance back into the Knights' goal.
The best chance of the day for Middle Georgia came in the 23rd minute as the Knights drew a penalty when the JWU defense was whistled for a handball. Wildcats keeper Michael Vasquez was up to the challenge and came up big with a penalty save on Jesus Sanchez's attempt from the spot. The Knights would continue to threaten, but a second yellow to Knights defender Thiago Kittelmann in the 79th minute helped Johnson & Wales see the game out.
Middle Georgia would outshoot the Wildcats 12-4, but JWU held the edge with shots on frame, 3-1.
"It was a gutsy performance from the guys," commented JWU Head Coach Matt Payne. "We played a really good team today and had to grind out a win. I am really proud of the hard work that the team put in."
The Wildcats will begin their three game road trip to Pennsylvania with a Friday contest at Penn State University- Greater Allegheny at 4:00 pm on September 6th.
