Charlotte, NC - Johnson & Wales Charlotte Men's Soccer has added another key piece with the signing of Rodolfo Billy Esparza-Diaz. Esparza-Diaz becomes the seventh member of the 2020 recruiting class for Head Coach Matt Payne.
Esparza-Diaz is a native Charlottean and was a standout performer at Rocky River High School. Captaining the Ravens under Coach Anthony Echezuria, Esparza-Diaz was recognized as team MVP as well as the 2019 Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools Player of the Year. Additionally, he earned NCSCA 4A All-State and All-Region honors and garnered Southwestern 4A All-Conference recognition. After representing Charlotte Soccer Academy's Development Academy for multiple years, he finished his club career as a member of CSA's ECNL team.
"I have aspirations to one day play professionally in my hometown, Charlotte, NC," reflected Esparza-Diaz on his decision to stay home and attend Johnson & Wales. "With the sport growing in Charlotte, it made sense to choose JWU, which has a winning program and is a great school. I believe at JWU I will stay focused on my education and take my game to another level."
Billy is the son of Alejandra Diaz and Jose Esparza and plans to major in Business Studies.
"Billy is an elite talent, someone we identified early as an ideal fit for what we want to do as a program," commented Coach Payne. "In addition to being an excellent player, I've been impressed by his demeanor and focus during the recruiting process. We're excited to welcome Billy and his family to Johnson & Wales."
