Charlotte, NC - JWU Charlotte Men's Soccer Coach Matt Payne announced Statesville native Micah Smith as a member of the 2020 recruiting class.
Smith attended Statesville Christian School in 2019, earning All-State, All-Region, and All-Conference honors. Upon graduation, he enrolled at the University of Mount Olive where he made 15 starts his first year of college. The midfielder played his club soccer for Lake Norman Soccer Club under Adam Tipper and Stephen Chaconas before suiting up for Coach Payne's Charlotte Independence Soccer Club ECNL team in spring 2020.
"I chose JWU Charlotte mainly because of the soccer coaching staff and the program's desire to win," commented Smith on his signing. "The campus was also a really important factor in making my decision. Being in Charlotte, the school is going to be able to give me a great opportunity in the business field in the future."
Micah is the son of Scott and Charity Smith. He has one older brother, Malachi, and four younger siblings: Moriah, Matthew, Merci, and Robbie. Micah plans to major in Business Administration. He currently holds a Business Certificate from Mitchell Community College.
"Micah is one of the first players that I recruited when I arrived at Johnson & Wales in the summer of 2018, and I'm glad to finally have the opportunity to coach him at the collegiate level," said Coach Payne. "He is an excellent soccer player that will add a lot to the team, but he is also a genuinely good person that has an infectious positive attitude. We couldn't be happier to welcome his wonderful family to JWU."
