Charlotte Native Stevenson Inks With JWU Cross Country

CHARLOTTE, NC -- Johnson & Wales Charlotte Cross Country Coach Peter Brown has added Stevenson Barnes to the inaugural Men's Cross Country Team. The Charlotte native attended Olympic High School, where he has been a standout track athlete. Barnes recognized a few former coaches in his development: "Some of the best coaches I've had so far are Coach Belizaire and Coach Wayburn," said Barnes. "Coach Belizaire was my high school coach and he really taught me the mental side of running and planning. Coach Wayburn was my middle school coach and he taught me more towards the fundamentals of my own training and the purpose behind it."

"I think JWU is perfect for creating a new beginning for me. The running program is completely new as well, so I thought it was a perfect match," commented Barnes on why he chose Johnson & Wales. "It becomes hard to find schools relating to your major and with a running program. This happened to be one of the very few schools to have both. I have a sister that went here and she had an amazing experience."

Stevenson is the son of Lydia and Stevenson Barnes Sr. The Honor Roll honoree plans to major in Health Science at JWU.

"Stevenson has been a pleasure to work with throughout the recruiting process. He is a polite and reliable young man who will bring leadership skills to our young team," commented Coach Brown on his the signing. "I am excited to watch his growth as a student-athlete over the next four years."
