Charlotte, NC -- In the second half of the USCAA Doubleheader with Mid-Atlantic ChristianUniversity, the women's teams matched up in a scrappy and fast-paced game. Outgoing Campus President Art Gallagher spoke to the crowd at his last home game in the position, and the crowd wore or received bowties in honor of his famous favorite accessory. The team came out inspired and rolled to a 80-62 victory in the game.
The Wildcats took the first lead on a lay-up from Justina Tyler off the jumpball. By the 16:13 mark, JWU held a 7-1 lead. JWU had some missed opportunities on lay-ups and inside shots, and MACU cut the lead to one point with 13:36 on the clock. The Wildcats turned up the defensive pressure and forced some turnovers to get some easy baskets. Vanderia Shackleford helped the Wildcats gain some more momentum with a lay-up and a putback off an offensive rebound, pushing the lead to eight points before two free throws by Courtney Pate gave the Wildcats their first double-digit lead at ten points. The Wildcats continued the press, and both teams battled for every loose ball, but JWU was able to take an eleven-point lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half, JWU turned up the defensive pressure even more, and by the 16:00 mark, led by twenty points. Donyelle Stuetley, Jaquana Pauling, and Justina Tyler all scored early in the half to help the Wildcats build their lead. They continued to battle with MACU, whose scrappy style forced some quick shots from the Wildcats. With 13:10 left to play, Marketa Smalls completed a three-point play to give the Wildcats a twenty-three point lead at 57-34. MACU trimmed the margin to as few as seventeen points with seven minutes left, but Courtney Pate hit a three and dished the ball to Jasmine Outlaw for a lay-up on the next two possessions to put the Wildcats back on track. The Mustangs creeped back to within seventeen points once more with 1:30 left, but the game was out of reach by then. The Wildcats held strong and finished with baskets by Vanessa Taylor and Rishann Jackson.
The Wildcats were led by Jaquana Pauling with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Donyelle Stuetley turned in a double-double as well with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Justina Tyler (10), Courtney Pate (11), and Vanderia Shackleford (11) were the other Wildcats in double figures. JWU's next game is tomorrow, November 16, as they travel to CIAA opponent Livingstone College to battle with the Lady Blue Bears. Game time is 2:00 PM.
