Lady Wildcats Knock Off NAIA Montreat College

Charlotte, NC -- In a rematch of a five-point loss from two weeks ago, the Johnson & Wales Women's Basketball Team emerged victorious Monday night as they defeated Montreat College 70-66 in the Student Center.  Jaquana Pauling had a monstrous game, scoring 19 points and pulling down 15 rebounds after coming off the bench.  She shot 90% from the field and came up big for the Lady Wildcats when they needed her.  Justina Tyler played the entire game and had 17 points, and Vanderia Shackleford added 16 points on the night.

The game started with JWU scoring on its first two possessions and running full court pressure to control the tempo early.  The Lady Wildcats pushed leads of six, seven, and eight points at different points in the first half.  The lead settled at five by halftime at a score of 37-32.

Just over three minutes into the second half, Montreat drew even with JWU at 39 and held a two-point lead with 14:20 left to play.  Between 10:00 and 9:00 on the clock, there were three lead changes ending with JWU holding a one-point lead after a basket by Audresha Merritt.  An offensive rebound and putback by Jaquana Pauling at 7:43 pushed the Wildcat lead to five at 53-48.  JWU continued to hold onto the lead by as many as six points down the stretch, but a delay-of-game technical foul allowed Montret to pull within two points with just over two minutes left, and a Montreat three-point basket put the Cavaliers in front by one point with 1:15 on the clock.  Two clutch free throws from Vanderia Shackleford reclaimed the lead for JWU with under a minute left, and the defense forced a Montreat turnover on their next possession.  Jaquana Pauling's basket on an assist from Audresha Merritt pushed the lead to three points with :35 left, and a Pauling rebound and free throw on the ensuing foul made it a two-possession game and out of reach for Montreat with :14.5 left.  The Wildcats played solid defense to finish out the night and take another victory for JWU.

The Wildcats are now 5-11 on the season and travel tomorrow to Bob Jones University for a doubleheader with the men's team.  The Lady Wildcats play at 5:00 PM with the men to follow at 7:00 PM.  Live video of the game is available on JWU's schedule pages.
