Swannanoa, NC -- The Lady Wildcats (8-13) took to the road tonight, paying a visit to USCAA foe (14) Warren Wilson. JWU dropped a close 51-47 decision to the Owls (12-13) back in early January, and the team was looking to even the season series. A poor shooting first half was ultimately too much to overcome as the Lady Wildcats fell 79-73.
Warren Wilson jumped out to a 20-6 lead behind four Kelia McMurry three pointers. The Lady Wildcats, meanwhile, were ice cold from the floor, missing fourteen of their first seventeen field goal attempts, and shot a paltry 27% for the period. The Lady Owls would extend their advantage to as many as twenty and cruised to the halftime break with a 40-23 lead.
JWU found their shooting touch and showed some fight in the second half. The Lady Wildcats were able to trim the Warren Wilson lead to 50-40 by the 13:40 mark. That hard work was subsequently erased by a 22-10 Owl run over the next nine minutes. The "never-say-die" Lady Wildcats didn't give up, outscoring Warren Wilson 23-7 over the game's final 4:56, but it wasn't quite enough to get them over the hump.
Vanderia Shackleford led three Lady Wildcats in double figures with 23 points. Donyelle Stuetley and Justina Tyler added 12 points each. Stuetley coupled 10 rebounds with her 12 points for her fourth double-double on the season. Jaquana Pauling led JWU on the boards with 12.
The Lady Wildcats return home Saturday for a 2 PM tip against Trinity Baptist College.
