Wildcats Earn EMAC Title With Win Over Builders

Charlotte, NC - The JWU Women's basketball team are the inaugural EMAC conference champions after defeating The Apprentice School 60-46 on Saturday.

The back and forth first quarter had three lead changes and ended with an 11-10 advantage for the Builders. Jada Morgan put JWU up 12-11 early in the second quarter, and the Wildcats never trailed again. JWU would stretch the second quarter lead to double digits, but Apprentice closed the gap to 27-22 entering halftime.

The third quarter saw the Wildcats extend their lead, outscoring their opponents 18-8 and extending their lead as high as 17 points. The Builders would close the gap to 10 points in the fourth, but never any closer as JWU finished with the 16 point victory.

JWU held Apprentice to 27% shooting from the field and out-rebounded Apprentice 44-34 The Wildcats also used an advantage at the free throw line, going 16-20 from the stripe as TAS went 9-18.

"I'm really excited for our team. I think we were a little nervous and played a little tight, but we locked in defensively and that's always the key for us. The Builders were a tough opponent. Their size and athleticism made it difficult for us at times," remarked Interim Coach Aram Parunak. "Winning the first EMAC tourney is a great accomplishment, but we still have a lot of work to do over the next couple of weeks. I'm really proud of our team's progress but we have to keep working."

Ineesha Hankerson finished with 14 points, 12 rebounds, 4 blocks and 2 steals. Chase Muhammad added 6 steals to her 26 points, leading all scorers. Bianca Covington also added 14 rebounds for JWU.

Muhammad was named tournament MVP after averaging 25.5 points and 4.5 steals. She went 7-16 from three and 14-16 from the free throw line for the tournament.

On Saturday the USCAA announced their national tournament field, and the Wildcats enter the national tournament as the #4 seed. They will travel to host school PSU Fayette where they will take on #5 PSU Beaver on March 4 at 12:00 pm.
