Charlotte, NC - The Johnson & Wales Women's Basketball Team hosted South Carolina Faith A&M on Saturday to open the 2019-2020 basketball season. The Wildcats set new records for most points in a game and largest margin of victory in an impressive 131-30 victory.
The Wildcats would take control early and never look back, ending the first quarter 30-5 and entering halftime with a 63-12 advantage. The second half was more of the same as JWU outscored their opponent 68-18. The team shot 59.2% for the game while limiting the Ragin'Bulls to 21.7%. The Wildcats also out-rebounded SC Faith A&M 63-14. The 14 rebounds allowed is a new record for the program, as is the 49 rebound advantage. JWU would collect 55 points off of 43 turnovers.
Ineesha Hankerson had a triple double for JWU with 18 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 steals. The Wildcats had six other players reach double digit points, led by Jamyah Montissol with 22 points. Christine Eppler added 20 points, Justice Wallace had 16, Ja'Yon Leak added 15, Micah Thomas had 12, and Shannon Martin chipped in 11. Hankerson's effort carried her over 1,000 career points for the Wildcats. Eppler grabbed 13 rebounds on the day, and Jada Morgan paced the team with 9 assists.
"Today was a great way to open our season," commented JWU Head Coach Ashley Raley-Ross after collecting a win in her JWU coaching debut. "Our team played as one unit and shared the ball very well. We also had a tremendous amount of support in the crowd."
JWU returns to the court on November 5th at 7:00 pm when they host Morris College.
