Charlotte, NC - The JWU Women's Basketball Team hosted Morris College on Tuesday, winning 67-56 over the Hornets from Sumter, SC.
The first quarter was a back and forth affair with three lead changes before JWU finished the period up 18-16. The Wildcats would clamp down the defense in the second quarter, outscoring Morris 14-9 to go into halftime 32-25. The Wildcats would outscore the Hornets 17-16 in the third before winning the last quarter 18-15 for the 67-56 final. JWU shot 42.2% while holding the Hornets to 25% shooting on the night. The Wildcats lost the turnover battle 45-27, but were outscored on points off turnovers only 28-19. The Wildcats had twice as many trips to the line as MC, going 25-40 compared to 10-20 for the Hornets.
Jada Morgan led JWU with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Ja'Yon Leak added 16 points for the Wildcats. After becoming the program's all-time leader in rebounds in the previous game, Ineesha Hankerson added eight more rebounds along with 14 points. Hankerson and Justice Wallace combined for 10 steals in the game.
"I'm very proud of the way our team responded to our half time talk," commented JWU Head Coach Ashley Raley-Ross. "They protected our home court and met challenges we set for them."
The Wildcats will travel to NCAA D1 opponent North Carolina A&T on November 9th for a 2:00 pm tip-off.
