Swannanoa, NC - In a USCAA D2 top ten matchup, the #6 Johnson & Wales Wildcats traveled to #5 Warren Wilson College and returned with an impressive 2-1 victory over their EMAC conference rival.
The Wildcats would open the scoring in the 18th minute when Brooklyn Cathey's through ball was slotted home by senior Lana Truese for her ninth goal of the season. It was Cathey's sixth assist. Only four minutes later WWC would level when they scored directly from a free kick. The game entered halftime 1-1 with JWU outshooting the Owls 7-6 in the first period.
The game stayed gridlocked until the 56th minute when JWU earned a free kick. Truese stepped up and found the head of Jacqueline Gomez for the game winning goal. The goal was the first of Gomez's career.
JWU goalkeeper Sarah Bartlett registered six saves in the win behind a strong defensive effort from the Wildcats.
"It was a good game for our team. Warren Wilson was confident coming in and asked a lot of our group. The Homecoming weekend made for a great environment," commented JWU Head Coach Matt Hisler after the victory. "Our women pushed each other on. We have been looking for the extra bit of leadership, perseverance and commitment, and we found that today."
JWU returns to the field on October 9th as they travel to Averett University for a 7:00 pm kick-off.
