Charlotte, NC - JWU Women's Soccer Coach Matt Hisler has added Avy Lucero as the fourth member of the 2020 recruiting class. Lucero is a Rockingham, NC native and attended Richmond Senior High School, where she served as captain her senior year.
"I chose JWU because as soon I stepped on the campus, it felt like a place I could call home for the next four years. JWU has many learning opportunities i could take advantage of and a great place to learn valuable life skills and develop new skills to start a career after school," said Lucero. "I'm beyond excited to start a new chapter of my life and meet new people. I look forward to becoming good friends with all the girls on the team and forming a strong bond."
Lucero is a four year starter for RSHS and was selected Sandhills 4A All-Conference and All-Region in both her freshman and junior seasons. The defender has played club soccer for AC Sandhills and Richmond Revolution.
"I am excited to introduce Avy Lucero to the USCAA. It is important to have a toughness in your back line, and Avy will bring plenty of that quality to our team," commented Coach Hisler on Lucero. "An intelligent player, she reads the game well and is excellent in minimizing the space that the other team plays in. Avy understands how important it is to win the individual battles on the field and is willing to switch her match up quickly as the need arises."
Avy is the daughter of Francisco and Georgina Lucero. She has two siblings: Sergio Chaparro and Victor Lucero, the latter of which plays for the JWU Men's Soccer Team. The A/B Honor Roll student plans to major in Media and Communication.
"Miss Lucero has strong leadership qualities," Coach Hisler concluded. "She is ready to set a great example for her teammates both in the importance of preparing for the success you want and being resilient in your mentality. I look forward to working with Avy this fall."
