Kinston, NC - The Wildcats started the 18-19 athletic year with a bang on Saturday. They traveled to Lenoir Community College and took both matches of the double header, 3-0, 3-0.
The Wildctas prevailed 25-21, 25-20, and 25-23 in the first match. Jamie Hay racked up 10 kills while Moana Reid added 22 assists. Kendall Watson accounted for 22 of the team's 62 digs, while Halle Franklin (10), Kerie Ketchie (9), and Toniya Scott (9) also chipped in. Toniya Scott also led the team with 6 solo blocks.
The second match of the night also saw the Wildcats victorious. Iyana Favor (10) and Toniya Scott (11) both had double-digit kills, with Moana Reid again leading the way with 35 assists. Four Wildcats achieved double digit digs: Kendall Watson with 28, Moana Reid with 13, and Toniya Scott and Halle Franklin both contributing 10. The final score was 26-24, 25-22, 25-19.
Head Coach Callie Phillips was happy with her team's debut effort. "I'm very pleased with our poise in the opening matches as we jumped out ahead and then battled from behind at times. We stayed aggressive and took opportunities when we had them. Our players worked as a team, and it really showed with some really exciting plays."
The Wildcats are next in action on Tuesday, August 28 at 4:00pm at USCAA foe Mid-Atlantic Christian University.
