Ferrum, VA- The JWU Volleyball Team traveled to Ferrum College on Tuesday. The Wildcats needed five exciting sets to stave off a furious Ferrum comeback, taking the match 3-2.
The Wildcats would cruise in set one 25-16. The second set again proved to be all JWU as the visitors claimed the 25-19 win.
The third set saw a shift in momentum. The Wildcats would go down 24-16 before tallying 5 straight points. The Panthers, though, would close it out 25-21 to extend the match to a fourth set. Ferrum's momentum continued in the fourth in another nail biter, this time taking the set 26-24 to force a deciding fifth set.
The drama continued in the fifth, with both teams trading leads. With Ferrum holding a 12-10 advantage, Wildcats Head Coach Callie Phillips called a timeout that sparked a four point burst from the Wildcats. The Panthers would close the gap to 14-13 before the Wildcats finished the match with a 15-13 victory.
"This one you just shake your head. We showed fight and resolve and finished when it mattered," said Phillips after the match. "We're happy to get back to Charlotte with a win."
Toniya Scott led JWU with 12 kills, followed by Iyana Favor with 11. Moana Reid contributed 32 assists and 14 digs to pace the Wildcats. Scott also had 13 digs, with Emily Arends and Lynasia Felder adding 11 digs each.
The Wildcats will take the floor again on September 10th with a 7:00 pm home match vs Davidson County Community College.
