CHARLOTTE, NC -- Johnson & Wales Charlotte Volleyball Coach Callie Phillips announced Teagan Gutka as the newest addition to the program. Gutka will complete her collegiate volleyball career at JWU Charlotte after three years as a member of the JWU Denver program. The 5'7" Setter/Right Side is originally from North Pole, Alaska. She graduated from Ben Eielson Sr. High School where she was selected to the All-Conference Team in 2016-2017. She also played for Arctic Volleyball Club. In 2019-2020, she was selected as 'Teammate of the Year' within the JWU Denver program. In her first three years for JWU Denver she amassed 22 kills and 57 digs for the Wildcats.
Gutka was also a member of the JWU Denver Cross Country and Track teams, and plans to run cross country for JWU Charlotte. Cross Country Coach Peter Brown is also excited to add Gutka to the program, "I am excited to have Teagan as a member of our inaugural women's cross country team. She brings collegiate running experience to our young team and will provide valuable leadership."
"After they announced the cancelation of all JWU Denver athletics, I was really upset about the thought of not finishing out my college career," said Gutka on transferring to JWU Charlotte. "A few of my friends told me they were transferring to Charlotte to play golf and suggested that I talk to the volleyball coach. I emailed Coach Phillips almost immediately after, we talked for awhile, and I initiated my transfer right after!
Teagan is the daughter of Tanya and TJ Gutka, and she credits her father for his influence in her volleyball career. "My dad was my very first volleyball coach, and he is absolutely part of why I love the game as much as I do." She is majoring in Culinary Arts and Food Service Management and has been recognized on the Dean's List 6 different terms at JWU Denver. The recipient of the 2020 El Pomar Leadership Scholarship, Gutka was also elected as the incoming President of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee for Johnson & Wales Denver.
"Teagan is a great addition for us this year. Her wonderful character and work ethic are already evident, and I'm happy she'll be spending her senior season with us. We are excited to welcome her to Charlotte."
Gutka concluded, "I have never been to Charlotte or to North Carolina, so I'm really excited to explore the city!"
