Cavaliers Edge Softball In Doubleheader

Montreat, N.C. - Host Montreat College defeated Johnson & Wales Charlotte 3-2 and 8-7 in a softball doubleheader on Friday afternoon.

The Cavaliers scored three runs in the first two innings and made that stand up over the next five. JWU scratched twice in the third after loading the bases with two outs. Mai Tellez-Martinez singled, bringing home Jaden Hamilton. A throwing error on the play also allowed Kaydence Hassell to score. The Wildcats managed a lone single by Katie Murphy from the point.

Tellez-Martinez had two hits and an RBI for JWU. She also went the distance at pitcher, allowing nine hits, three earned runs, while waking two and striking out one.

After each team scored once in their half of the first inning of game two, the Wildcats added three runs in the second. Elizabeth Salazar scored on Hassell's double to left center. Hassell then scored on Laila Strawn's fielders choice. A throwing error by the Montreat shortstop allowed Strawn to come all the way around to score as well.

Montreat scored four in the third, and the teams traded single runs in the 4th and 5th innings. The Wildcats then manufactured two runs in the top of the seventh, using a single from Strawn, a Montreat error, a wild pitch, and a Murphy sac fly to grab a 7-6 lead. The Cavaliers loaded the bases with no out in the bottom of the inning, and pushed across two runs to win 8-7.

Hassell's two hits and one RBI led the offense for JWU in game two. Murphy went 3.2 innings in the circle for JWU, allowing three earned runs, striking out four, while walking three.

The Wildcats return to the North Carolina mountians on Sunday as they travel to Brevard for a pair of games beginning at 1:00pm.
