Salem Takes Two From Softball

Charlotte, N.C. - Salem College defeated Johnson & Wales Charlotte in a softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Spirits won by scores of 3-1 and 7-2.

Game one was a low scoring defensive battle. Salem scored one run in the top of the first, and JWU answered in the bottom of the second as Addison Laney's RBI single scored Mai Tellez-Martinez. Salem scored what would be the game's final runs in the top of the sixth when they loaded the bases with no outs and Karma Morrison drove home two with a single.

JWU outhit the Spirits 10-6, led by Laila Strawn's 3-3 day at the plate. Katie Murphy pitched well for the Wildcats, throwing a complete game six hitter, allowing just two earned runs. She struck out two and walked none.

Salem scored six runs in the first four innings of game two, while holding JWU scoreless during that stretch. JWU did scratch in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two on a Jaden Hamilton single to center field, but could get no closer. Hamilton and Hanna Ciplickas each had two hits for the Wildcats. Tellez-Martinez pitched six innings, allowing four runs, only one of them earned, while walking one and striking out another.

The Wildcats have the week off before hosting High Point for an exhinition doubleheader on Saturday, March 28th at 1:00pm.
