Charlotte, N.C. - Johnson C. Smith swept a pair of games against host Johnson & Wales on Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Bulls won by scores of 7-4 and 9-7.
Game one saw JCSU jump out to a 4-0 lead after three and a half innings. JWU scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and added two in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't overtake the Golden Bulls.
Mai Tellez-Martinez went 4-4 at the plate while
Kaydence Hassell added three hits. She also stole two bases, scored a run, and drove another in.
Katie Murphy pitched five innings, allowing four earned runs, four hits. She walked four and struck out four.
JWU jumped ahead early in game two, plating two runs in the first inning.
Laila Strawn led off with a single and advanced to third on Tellez-Martinez's double. She scored on a
Seven Hope groundout. Tellez-Martinez then scored on Hassell's groundout in the subsequent at-bat. JCSU used two big innings to pull ahead, scoring five runs in the second and adding four more in the seventh. JWU tried to mount a late rally, scoring two in the fifth, another in the sixth, and two in the seventh, highlighted by Tellez-Martinez's solo home run in the final frame. Tellez-Martinez was 2-2 in game two, part of a perfect 6-6 day at the plate.
Enijah Gary pitched 4.1 innings, allowing 4 earned runs. She walked two and struck out three.
The Wildcats are off until April 8th when they travel to Demorest, Ga. to take on Piedmont University in a pair of games beginning at 1:00pm.
