The Johnson & Wales Lady Wildcats traveled to Hickory, NC to
face off against the Lady Buccaneers from Catawba Valley Community
College. The match score ended in favor of Catawba Valley 3 to
0.
In the first set, Johnson & Wales started out slowly. The
Catawba Valley crowd showed great pride for their school and
cheered on the Lady Buccaneers to the first win of the match. With
great play at the net from Erin Collins and
Francesca Ederton, the final score of the set was Catawba
Valley 25 and Johnson & Wales 12.
The second set began, and the Lady Wildcats fell behind early.
However with strong play from Shanna Stewart and Felicia Anderson,
JWU made a come back with in 2 points. Emily Kirchner then helped
to tie the game at 13. Coach Shannon Hudson from Catawba Valley
proceeded to call a time out and after this the Lady Buccaneers
responded well. Catawba Valley was able to take 7 of the next 8
points from the Lady Wildcats. The Wildcats tried to come back,
however Catawba's defense was to strong. The end score was 25-20 in
favor of Catawba Valley.
Continuing to the third and final set, both teams knew what
needed to get done. Coming out aggressively, and trading points
back and forth both teams showed heart. However, CVCC picked up
their game at the net and was able to pull ahead with the help from
Breckin Settlemyer. Catawba's defense continued and the Lady
Buccaneers closed out the third set with a victory of 25-12.
The Lady Wildcats never gave up the battle and when asked about
performance Coach Phillips of the Lady Wildcats stated "the girls
are playing well in some sequences, now we just have to put those
sequences together."
The Johnson & Wales Wildcats next game will be participation
in a tri-match against Johnson C. Smith and Voorhees College. Two
opponents the Lady Wildcats have already faced off
against with this year. The tri-match will be held at Johnson
C. Smith on October 16, 2010.
