Box Score Charlotte, NC - The Lady Wildcats (16-8) (Ranked 5th in the USCAA Coaches Poll) played host to the Flyers of Sandhills Community College this evening for the second of two matchups of the season. JWU was able to avenge an early season loss to the Flyers, winning the match 3 games to 1.
Each team went on multiple short scoring runs to open game one. JWU was able to gain the upper hand in the game thanks a 7-1 run, behind strong play from Madelyn Leonard. Their lead would be short lived as a lack of communication amongst the Lady Wildcats on the court allowed SCC to go on a 7-0 spurt of their own. Following a timeout by Head Coach Callie Phillips to regroup her team, JWU would score 5 unanswered points to retake the lead behind outstanding play from Kaitlin Kuntz and Emily Kirchner. SCC responded with a 5-0 to tie the game, but the Wildcats were able to regain their composure, closing the game 25-22.
Game two remained close throughout, as JWU unleashed a series of ferocious kill attempts. The Flyers defense was up to the challenge, withstanding the Lady Wildcats offensive barrage. SCC would take a 19-16 late in game two, largely due to critical errors made by the Lady Wildcats. The Flyers would score six of the next nine points, taking game two 25-19.
Errors by both teams kept the score even early in the third game. JWU fell behind midway through the game despite excellent defense by Kuntz. The Lady Wildcats were able to regroup behind hustle and scrambling team defense to tie the game at 17. Lauren Cordts then took over at the net, sparking a 6-1 Lady Wildcat run. The Lady Wildcats looked poised to close the game at this point. Unfortunately, SCC responded with their own 6-1 run to tie the game at 24. JWU came out of the final timeout to take the last two points and win game three, 26-24.
The Flyers jumped out to 6-1 lead in game four, as JWU lacked focus. The Lady Wildcats would rally to take a 12-9 lead, as their serving improved, and they began to dominate at the net. JWU continued their strong net play as they pulled away for a 25-15 game four win, and a 3-1 match victory.
The Lady Wildcats hit the road on Tuesday, October 16 when they take on the Pioneers of Spartanburg Methodist in the penultimate road game of the regular season. Match time set for 7:00 pm.
