Box Score Charlotte, NC – The Lady Wildcats (11-6, Ranked 3rd in the USCAA Coaches Poll) played host this evening to the Buccaneers of Catawba Community College in their second and final match-up of the season. JWU started off strong in game one but falling in the match 3 games to 1.
CVCC controlled the net early in Game 1, taking a 7-4 lead. JWU responded with strong defense, from Lauren Cordts, Shanna Stewart, and Reanna Bray, going on a 5-0 run, to take a 13-6 lead. However, CVCC stormed back, as teams exchanged leads and the Buccaneers taking a 1 point lead, and eventualy stretching to a 3 point lead. but the Wildcats stepped up their offense to tie up the score at 23. Great saves from Cordts and Tori Dublino helped the Wildcats close out game one 25-23.
The Buccaneers started off game two with hard hitting offense taking the lead, 7-2. With great serving from Stewart, JWU went on a 5-0 run to tie up the score. Cordts and Bray had multiple kills during the game, which were assisted by great passes from Kaitlin Kuntz. Strong net play from both teams kept the score close, JWU was able to maintaining their lead at 19-16. Though, CVCC continued to play smart, and eventually rallied to take game two 25-22.
Each team's offense was clicking to start game three. The Buccaneers jumped out to a 6-4 lead, but JWU fought back with kills from Moriah Hughes and Cordts to tie the score at 6. Sturdy teamwork at the net helped the Wildcats to keep the score close. Bray's consistent blocking at the net made life difficult for the CVCC hitters, but it wasn't enough as CVCC stretched their lead to five at 16-11. Coach Phillips called a timeout to stem the tide, but the Buccaneers continued their run after the timeout, extending the lead to ten. The Wildcats fought back but fell short, losing game three 25-13.
CVCC carried their momentum through to game four, jumping out to a 9-2 lead . JWU fought back with strong net play from Madelyn Leonard and Cordts. Kick started by a Bray kill, JWU tried to get back in the game and cut the CVCC lead to 6 at 16-10.. Though the Wildcats continued to play tough through the game, they fell short losing game four 25-14 and the match, 3-1.
The Lady Wildcats are next in action as they host the Johnson & Wales Tri-Match on Saturday, October 6th. They face off against Spartanburg Methodist at 1pm, and then wrap up play versus Voorhees at 5pm.
