Lady Wildcats Earn Split in Home Tri-Match

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Charlotte, NC –  Johnson & Wales (12-7) (Ranked 3rd in USCAA Coaches Poll) hosted the annual JWU Tri-Match with Voorhees College and Spartanburg Methodist.  The Lady Wildcats played hard in both games, and were able to earn a split in the two contests.

The first game of the tri-match between JWU and SMC got off to a slow start. The Lady Wildcats found themselves down 3-1 to the Pioneers. SMC continued to dominate the course of play throughtout game one with effective offense, and cruised to a 25-15 win.  Game two started off with the two teams trading the lead back and forth.  The Pioneers pulled ahead using good defense at the net to spark a 5-0 run.  JWU responded with quick hits from Shanna Stewart and Moriah Hughes, allowing the Lady Wildcats to take the lead 14-12.  Both team exchanged leads late in the game, but SMC ultimately took game two 25-23.  Mistakes from the Pioneers gave JWU a 4-1 lead to start game three, but they would quickly recover, closing out the game and match with a run to win game three 25-13.

Johnson & Wales began match 2 against the Lady tigers of Voorhees College with a quick 7-4 lead behind great serving from Tia Luneke. Chelsi Gallagher also pitched in from the service line, spurring the Lady Wildcats to a 14-0 run, that allowed them to take a huge lead, and win game one going away, 25-7.  JWU carried that momentum through to the early portion of game two as Luneke's serving again paved the way to a 5-1 start.  The Wildcats extended their lead with kills from Lauren Cordts, Madelyn Leonard, and Reanna Bray, eventually taking game two 25-13.  Game three saw JWU once again gain the upper hand as Stewart and Hughes led the attack at the net, with assists from Kaitlin Kuntz. Great team work from the Lady Wildcats prevented Voorhees from mounting any sort of rally, as JWU easily took game 3, 25-10.

JWU improved to 4-3 at home on the season, ending a 2 game skid in the friendly confines of the Student Center. The Lady Wildcats are next in action as they travel to play their cross-town rival Johnson C. Smith University on Tuesday, October 9th.  Match time set for 7:00pm.
