Flyers Top Wildcats in First Match of the Season

Box Score

Pinehurst, NC - The Wildcats (0-1) traveled to Pinehurst Thursday night to play the Flyers of Sandhills Community College in JWU's first match of the 2012 season. Following a successful preseason training camp, the Lady Wildcats had high hopes of starting the season with a win. Unfortunately, JWU was unable to get the victory, falling short to the Flyers 3 games to 1.

JWU came out of the locker room eager to start the match. The Wildcats took the lead over their opponents early on and went on to take Game 1, by a score of 25-22.

The Lady Wildcats weren't able to continue their early momentum in Game 2 as the Flyers took the early lead. SCC would quickly stretch the lead to 10, and never looked back, taking Game Two 25-16.

Service errors by both teams led to an even start in Game 3 before the Flyers reeled off six straight points over the Wildcats. JWU was able to cut into the SCC lead with strong net play by Shanna Stewart. Her efforts were not enough, however, as The Flyers won Game Three, 25-23.

Game Four would prove to be the final one in the match. SCC used strong defensive play to jump out to a 7 point lead early in the game. Stewart and Kaitlin Kuntz led a Lady Wildcat rally, as they trimmed the Flyer lead late in the game. The Flyers would eventually hold off JWU in the fourth and deciding game, 25-22.

The Lady Wildcats are next in action as they travel to Lexington to take on the Storm of Davidson County Community College on Tuesday, August 28th. Match time is set for 7pm.
