Box Score Winston-Salem, NC - The Lady Wildcats (1-2) traveled to Winston-Salem this evening to take on the Bruins of Piedmont International University in their first match-up of the season. JWU played strong both defensively and offensively taking the match 3 games to 1.
Behind strong play from Moriah Hughes, the Lady Wildcats entered game one leading the match 6-3. Keeping their momentum, JWU extended their lead by 5. Unfortunately, PIU was better defensively which allowed for the Bruins to take game one.
Entering game two, the Lady Wildcats took the lead 8-4 behind strong net play and 3 kills from Shanna Stewart. The Bruins responded to JWU's lead with a 4-0 run to tie the game. Regaining control, JWU went on a 6-1 run. The Lady Wildcats were able to hold the lead for the remainder of game two behind excellent net play from Madelyn Leonard, Hughes, and Stewart as well as great defense from Emily Kirchner and Kaitlin Kuntz. Game two ended 25-18.
Kuntz's strong serving and defensive play lead the Lady Wildcats to take a 5-1 lead into game three. JWU quickly stretched their lead to 15 behind great all-around team play. JWU claimed game three 25-10.
In the fourth game of the match, JWU started with a 3-0 lead. PIU swiftly tied the score, but then the Lady Wildcats began to re-assert themselves at the net to take an 11 point lead. The Bruins went on a brief run, but JWU regained their composure, taking game four 25-14 and winning the match.
The Lady Wildcats are next in action as they travel to play in the Livingstone College Tournament on September 7th and 8th.
