Box Score Charlotte, NC - No. 7 JWU (19-8) returned home Monday night for the start of a five game homestand. They hoped to avenge an early season road loss to Sandhills Community College (13-7) to kick things off. Despite a slow start, the Lady Wildcats prevailed 3-1.
The Flyers opened game one with three straight points before a Jazmyne Williams block put JWU on the board. SCC continued their strong play and ran out to an 18-8 lead. From this point, the Lady Wildcats mounted a huge rally. They trimmed the Flyer lead to 2 at 19-17 on a Madelyn Leonard kill. 2 kills each from Lucy Herrmann and Moriah Hughes on the next four serves gave JWU a 21-19 lead, capping off a 13-1 run. SCC would tie the game at 21, but the Lady Wildcats scored the last four points of the game, punctuated by Hughes's service ace to end it.
JWU got off to a much better start in game two. A Leonard kill gave the Lady Wildcats a 6-3 lead that they would maintain for much of the rest of the game. Back-to-back blocks by Williams pushed the JWU lead to seven at 24-17, and they would go on to finish off the game 25-20.
Game three also saw the Lady Wildcats jump out to an early lead. Back-to-back kills by Hughes combined with a Hughes/Williams block staked JWU to an 8-2 lead. A Kylie Marquardt kill helped the Lady Wildcats maintain their six point advantage at 16-10. From there, the Flyers slowly chipped away at the lead, eventually tying the score at 20. From that point, neither team could take control as the game was tied six more times, before SCC finally eeked out a 31-29 game three win.
JWU exerted their front line dominance early in game four. Hughes had five kills and Reanna Bray added three more as the Lady Wildcats built a 12-7 advantage. Another Hughes kill gave JWU a 19-14 lead before the Flyers ralled to tie the score at 19. Consecutive kills from Williams and Hughes thwarted the SCC momentum, and the Lady Wildcats wrapped up game four, and the match on a Lucy Herrmann kill. Game four finished at 25-22.
Moriah Hughes led the Lady Wildcat attack with 19 kills, while Jazmyne Williams came up with 7 big blocks. Kylie Marquardt set a new school record with 34 assists, and Tori Dublino tallied 25 digs. The win was the 19th of the season, which bettered the 18 wins of last season's team.
The Lady Wildcats are back in action tomorrow night as they host USCAA rival Mid-Atlantic Christian. Match time is set for 6:00pm.
